Scientific paper

This paper analyzes the spatial energy distribution of stellar images formed by ground-based astronomical telescopes. Lorentzian functions are fitted to intensity profiles of real images obtained with a CCD and the results are used to calculate the energy transmission of astronomical instruments which accept an image with a rectangular or circular stop. The results have been used in the design of the new large echelle spectrographs for the Anglo Australian Telescope (AAT) and the William Herschel Telescope (WHT). A series of figures is presented showing the transmission as a function of the seeing FWHM and the aperture size.
