Results are presented of a detailed study of ∂F2/∂ ln Q2, which has the purpose of improving our knowledge of characteristic features of the evolution equations for the proton structure functions. In particular, the effects of screening corrections on the logarithmic derivative have been investigated. All HERA experimental measurements are analysed and compared with the predictions of several schemes, including a Regge type model. It is shown that several approaches that have very different basic construction are not discriminated by the data. Consequently signals of gluon saturation cannot be considered as conclusive.
