The seasonal characteristics of the development of the main ionospheric trough (MIT) are analyzed on the basis of model calculations and experimental data. It is shown that the MIT disappears with the advent of the polar day at F-region heights. Both model calculations and experimental data agree that the seasonal features in the development of the MIT can be explained by the full-shadow mechanism.
