We wish to obtain CS (2-1) maps of a sample of southern Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs) to locate their embedded cold, dense cores. IRDCs are identified by their high mid-infrared opacities and are thought to be the precursors to cluster-forming clumps. Our recent mm continuum survey with the IRAM 30m of northern IRDCs, revealed each IRDC to contain at least one compact core. Because the core masses and sizes are comparable to hot cores that form individual high-mass stars, we suggest that IRDC cores are the cold percursors to individual high-mass stars. We now wish to extend our study of IRDC cores to include those within a sample of 10 southern IRDCs. These observations will provide finding charts for future mm continuum and molecular line observations with the ATCA.
