In this thesis I describe and discuss different techniques that can be used to detect Black Holes (BH) in galaxy nuclei and to estimate their mass. Moreover, for a number of galaxies observed with the Hubble Space Telescope, I analyze in detail the properties of their central regions, with the aim of identifying dynamical and/or photometric signatures of the presence of nuclear BHs as well of the process that led to their own formation in the context of the formation of the host galaxy itself.
