Results are reported for a comparative laboratory study of several samples of both alpha-SiC and beta-SiC submicronic particles. Grinding and sedimentation have been used to select grain sizes. Transmission electron microscopy analysis allows one to determine size distributions and mean diameters. Extinction efficiencies of samples have been measured in the range 2.5-40 microns; the typical SiC band falling at about 11.5 microns is clearly seen. The band shape and position appear different from one sample to the other and, in addition, are significantly size-dependent. Two or three peaks are present in the band as an indirect indication of the geometrical form of the particles contained in each sample. The measured extinction efficiencies are reported in tabular form to provide data useful to those interested in matching astronomical observations.
