The KATRIN experiment will search for the neutrino mass in a model independent way by the precise measurement of the tritium β-spectrum. A windowless source of gaseous tritium with 95% isotopic purity and column density of 5·1017 T2 molecules/cm2 will operate at temperature of 27 K stabilized to 0.1 % by a boiling liquid neon cryostat. The β-particles will be adiabatically guided from the source through two electrostatic retardation spectrometers up to the position-sensitive semiconductor detector by means of about 30 superconducting magnets producing fields of 3-6 T. The main spectrometer (diameter of 10 m, length of 23.3 m, vacuum better than 10-11 mbar) will operate with resolution of 0.9 eV at 18.6 keV. The retarding high voltage will be monitored to ppm level by precise voltage measurement and independently by a third retardation spectrometer with radioactive sources of monoenergetic electrons. The pre-spectrometer will reduce incoming flux of β-particles from 1010s-1 to 104s-1 in the main spectrometer. KATRIN sensitivity on the neutrino mass should reach 0.2 eV after 1000 days measurement, which is an order of magnitude improvement in comparison with the best present limits.
