IN the discussion which followed the reading of Prof. Balfour Stewart's
paper on magnetic declination, at the Physical Society, considerable
weight was attached to Carrington's observation of a solar outburst
observed on September 1, 1859, and the simultaneous occurrence of a
movement of the magnetic needles at the Kew Observatory.
