The Rayleigh test has become a standard statistical test used in Very High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy for searching for evidence of periodic gamma-ray emission. This is because it is easy to calculate, robust in use, and involves no arbitrary choice of parameter, unlike tests such as binned chi^2 (epoch folding). The validity of the test depends on the conditions of the application. In the case of long-period pulsars in data sets of a few hours duration one problem is red noise in which the theoretical probability distribution is incorrect at low periods. A re-formulation of the Rayleigh test statistic is supplied which removes this problem.
