Exotic Atoms And Molecules

Scientific paper

In this Review I will describe some properties of the positron (``antimatter'') in interaction with ordinary matter at low energies, in order to explain why positron physics inspires such devotion and enthusiasm in its practitioners. Positron scattering is much like electron scattering, may involve unusual bound states and resonances, often satisfies simple dispersion relations, and can usually be analyzed without invoking the Pauli principle. The experimental production of low-energy positron beams has been an unusual cross-disciplinary challenge, and, finally, the positron dies in a high-energy burst of photons which can carry diagnostic information about atoms, molecules, and astrophysical environments.
