Solar Flares: Dynamics

Scientific paper

One of the main tasks of the SPIRIT experiment is to investigate dynamics of solar flares with high spatial (<10") and temporal (<10s) resolution in hot (5-15 MK) MgXII 8.42 A line. To overcome telemetry limitations, a special algorithm for on-board processing was developed and installed on the SPIRIT instrument which permits to monitor for a long time flare events by measuring temporal variations of MgXII brightness over the disk. From March 2002 to April 2003 images of several tens of flares were registered in the monitor mode with temporal resolution of 7 s. This method increases capability of the SPIRIT instrument to detect flares and to reveal details of temporal and structural variations of the pre-flare plasma which cannot be seen by ordinary photometric measurements.
