Quantification of the solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral irradiance in both absolute value and variability over time is of vital importance for understanding the structure and variability of the Earth's thermosphere and ionosphere. Observations of solar EUV irradiance have been sporadic, limited in both temporal and spectral coverage, with large absolute uncertainties. The measurements have often raised more questions than they have answered. The maximum of solar cycle 23 has seen the beginning in a new era of solar EUV observations with unprecedented accuracy and precision. This paper will provide observiews of the history of EUV spectral irradiance measurements, the current state of measuring and understanding solar EUV variability, and the future measurement plans into solar cycle 24 and beyond.
