With the exception of the Milky Way, only one normal edge-on spiral galaxy, NGC 891, is known to have an X-ray emitting halo. We propose ACIS-S observations of 3 nearby edge-on spiral galaxies. These galaxies are very similar in mass and star formation intensity to NGC 891 and the MW, and we have a range of optical observational data strongly suggesting these galaxies have hot halos. With Chandra's high spatial resolution we can robustly detect NGC 891-like hot halos, quantify their properties, and differentiate between the two theories of their origin: SN feedback and blow-out from the disk, or accretion of gas from the IGM. Furthermore, shadowing of the X-ray background by the disks of these galaxies will constrain the amount of gas in the warm/hot intergalactic medium.
