A mechanism of VLF wave-proton interaction, which accounts for proton precipitation, is proposed. The equations describing the particle motion in the wave field and inhomogeneous ambient magnetic field are derived. The criteria for isolated resonance approximation are discussed in terms of the conditions of strong and weak inhomogeneity; the change of particle energy while crossing one isolated resonance is calculated. The diffusion coefficients from the proton pitch-angle diffusion and the precipitating flux are evaluated.
