The problem of energy transport in sunspot penumbrae is addressed. This paper presents the mathematical tools to investigate numerically the dynamics of a thin flux tube, which evolves in a 2D background formed by a magneto-static sunspot model. The goal is to study the role of interchange convection in penumbral energy transport and to examine the usefullness of thin flux tubes as a physical entity to explain observed penumbral features such as penumbral grains, bright and dark filaments and the Evershed flow.
