The need for a theory of star formation is examined by means of a timescale argument. The relationship of star formation and interstellar material is described. Simple dynamics in star formation theory are used to illustrate the principle of collapse under gravity and to examine one of the difficulties encountered by such a mechanism. It is shown how simple physical arguments can be used to probe the validity of an apparently complicated and sophisticated theory. It is concluded that star formation theory, despite apparent complexity and sophistication, remains in a rudimentary state.
