Mariner 9 and Viking images are used to trace sequential changes in the surface topography and environment of Mars. In summary, water at one time flowed freely enough to cut V-shaped valleys in the surface. The lower ends of the valleys were buried by sedimentation, partially volcanic ash, then deformed by tectonic activities. Some groundwater outflows occurred, followed by reshaping of the valleys by glacial movements. Thinning of the atmosphere and subsequent cooling formed the permafrost that eliminates any chance for further groundwater outflows.
