The Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO) is a
network of first generation interferometric detectors aiming to make the
first direct observations of gravitational waves. This paper surveys the
status of commissioning and data analyses of the initial LIGO as well as
the plans for the future.
