Polarimetric methods are proposed for the search for light Goldstone bosons (axions and arions) in the emission from astronomical objects. The concept involves the use of the photon-to-Goldstone boson conversion process in magnetic fields of compact stars as well as of interstellar and intergalactic media. This process strongly depends on the state of photon polarization and may result in a significant polarization of the radiation. The best candidates for observation are radio pulsars, X-ray binary systems with small massive components, and magnetic white dwarfs.
