The Maunder minimum of sunspot activity in the latter half of the 17th century, where the usual 11-year cyclic pattern seems to have been interrupted, suggests the possibility that such excursions have occurred many times previous to the 17th century. The record of Chinese and Korean pre-telescopic observations of sunspots is reexamined, and while some gaps in the numbers of sunspots can be attributed to political causes, there remain three, centered around 700 A.D., 1310 A.D., and 1480 A.D., respectively, which have a good chance of being Maunder-type minima. Variations in carbon 14 production corroborate this finding.
