We describe the design and performance of an extensive air shower array
which has been operated in its present configuration at Mount Hopkins,
Arizona since 1987. The array has a threshold energy of 40 TeV and is
located at the same site as the GRANITE VHE gamma ray astronomy
experiment of the Whipple Observatory Collaboration.
