VNIR, the visible channel of the VIMS (Visual Near-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer), has the task to cover the 0.35-5-micron wavelength range by means of three channels, one in the visible and two in the near IR. Here, the visible channel is discussed with particular reference to the Cassini mission. The discussion covers the scientific background of the mission, the study of Saturn rings, atmospheric studies, and a description of the VNIR hardware and capabilities.
