Carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch stars are sites of dust formation and undergo mass loss at rates ranging from 10-7 to 10-4Msun/yr. The state-of-the-art in modeling these processes is time-dependent models which simultaneously solve the grain formation and gas dynamics problem. The authors present results from such a model, which also includes an exact solution of the radiative transfer within the system.
