The authors present UV-visible spectra of carbon grains produced by direct condensation of the carbon vapors in partically hydrogenated atmospheres. The freshly formed grains exhibit an extinction peak in the wavelength range 200 - 240 nm whose exact position depends on the hydrogen abundance. The results are discussed in terms of formation and evolution of circumstellar and interstellar cosmic dust.
