Scientific paper

The physics potential and the complementarity of the large scale
underground European detectors: Water Cherenkov (MEMPHYS), Liquid Argon
TPC (GLACIER) and Liquid Scintillator (LENA) is presented with emphasis
on the major physics opportunities, namely proton decay, supernova
detection and neutrino parameter determination using accelerator beams.
