Archival photographic observations of the progenitor and CCD UBVRI photometry of the remnant are presented for the peculiar nova V838 Mon. We argue that the B-type star seen in the spectrum of the remnant dominated in the spectrum of the progenitor, and that this B star is a member of a binary system including a cool supergiant formed in the outburst in 2002.
