In the coronal-interplanetary space the plasma motion, in a reference frame corotating with the sun, is aligned with the magnetic field. Just like the solar wind, which is the supersonically expanding flow along open field lines, the flow along closed field lines is mainly driven by the pressure gradient. The flow in the regions of closed field lines is subsonic, being determined by the conditions at the two footpoints of the magnetic flux tube.
