It is shown that the plane-parallel Eddington approximation for the integrodifferential equation of radiative transfer may provide reasonably accurate predictions of albedo and absorptivity for all values of optical depth and single-scattering albedo, for scattering phase functions (Rayleigh, Henyey-Greenstein and Mie) with asymmetry factors less than or equal to one-half. The Eddington approximation is found to be least effective for intermediate values of optical depth and single-scattering albedo. For case of substantial backward or forward peaking of the scattering phase function (as in the Mie function), the delta-Eddington approximation yields good results.
