Direct and indirect influences of solar activity on the near-Earth environment are reviewed. Implications of the high levels of solar activity which are expected to occur in the 1990-1994 time period are described. It is suggested that, if solar activity during solar cycle 22 reaches extreme levels, then geomagnetic activity and its related effects also will reach extreme levels during and after solar maximum years.
