Approximate regularized expectation values of the stress-energy tensor reg and the field fluctuation <φ2>reg of the masslesss, conformally invariant, scalar field in the Israel-Hartle-Hawking vacuum state in Schwarzschild spacetime is constructed by means of Hadamard regularization. It is shown that, solving the constraint equation with appropriate boundary conditions, it is possible to construct a simple expression that reproduces the exact <φ2>reg with great accuracy. The one parameter family of reg is derived. It is argued that after a suitable choice of parameter the approximation is obtained which is in excellent agreement with the earlier numerical results. The formulas presented may be regarded as a natural and simple generalization of existing polynomial approximations. The case of the Boulware vacuum is briefly discussed.
