Observations of substorm-associated aurora carried out by the Sondrestrom and EISCAT radars are presented. For many magnetospheric substorms, the auroral oval near midnight is seen to expand poleward in conjunction with strong negative perturbations measured by local ground magnetometers. The observations described were made during times when auroral precipitation was expanding poleward to latitudes greater than 70 degrees. These data show that a poleward-expanding aurora is a well-defined event at latitudes above 70 degrees, consisting of intense precipitation and westward ionospheric currents. It is shown that in all cases there is evidence for poleward motion of both the electrojet and the precipitation, and each event is characterized by the sudden onset of a negative bay in the ground magnetic H-component.
