Scientific paper

A review is presented of radioastronomy techniques and technologies which have been used since the first maps of the galactic radio background were generated to current observations of radio galaxies and quasars. Attention is given to beam smoothing and image restoration, beam-shaped control, long-baseline interferometry and Fourier analysis, aperture synthesis, the use of undersampled aperatures and the CLEAN synthesis algorithm, and self-calibration. Application of the hardware and methods in the MERLIN, VLA, and in worldwide VLBI investigations are outlined.
