The first discovery of a neutron star is described, along with the impact of the discovery on astronomy. No neutron stars had been detected prior to 1967 because scans were being made for emissions from vibrational, rather than rotational, energies. The erection of a 4.5 acre phased array at Cavendish Laboratory permitted detection of an object a pulsation period regular to within one part in 10 million. It is shown that an automated analysis of the data would have delayed the discovery of the pulsar for a number of years. The impact of the discovery on solid-state physics, models of stellar atmospheres, black hole studies, and for proving the existence of gravitational waves are discussed.
