An analysis of experimental data confirms the existence of a pulsating three-dimensional Pi2 current system including field-aligned currents that flow both out of and into the ionosphere. The cross section of the outflowing currents is smaller than that of the inflowing ones, and, accordingly, the density of the outflowing currents is greater than that of the inflowing ones. The existence of this current system makes it possible to explain the absence of time delay in the generation of Pi2 pulsations at midlatitudes with respect to the auroral zone as well as the appearance of a midlatitude maximum of the Pi2 amplitude.
