The solar-flare prediction problem is formulated in terms of Boolean logic; the comparsion of truth tables with conjugacy tables is considered. The introduction of some very general assumptions makes it possible to formulate a general approach to the development of prediction schemes and to the selection of model elements and informative features. Experimental results are presented on the verification of several prediction methods. Particular attention is given to a method for the routine short-term prediction of flares on the basis of a pattern-recognition learning methodology. Results obtained with this method for the 1986-1988 period are discussed.
