Consideration is given to the possibility that the shape of a planetary nebula can provide information on the parameters of the binary system in which it was formed. It is shown that the observed distribution of planetary nebula shapes over ellipticities can be explained only if the nebulae did originate in the binary systems. The mass ratio distribution of the binary systems has only a small effect on the observed ellipticity function of the planetary nebulae. The period distribution law of binary systems is derived and discussed.
