Application of the Laplace transform to the nonstationary equation of transfer permits the problem of the determination of the photon density distribution over specific path lengths in a multilayered atmosphere to be reduced to the solution of a corresponding stationary problem. In this case, as well as in the homogeneous case, it suffices just to study conservatively scattering medium. Formulas for the mean path lengths in the individual layers are presented and consideration is given to the case where the transmission function can be represented as a continuous superposition of exponents.
