An evaluation of mean zonal acceleration and heat rates induced by atmospheric tides for solstice conditions are presented for the mesopause level. In addition, calculation of Lagrangian mean velocities are also shown. Comparisons are made with previous theoretical results. Whereas the semidiurnal tide weakly affects the momentum and thermal balances at the mesopause level, it is shown that the diurnal tide plays a major role in these budgets. Furthermore, diurnal tide effects must be taken into account in any study of minor constituent transport in this region, provided that the distortions of the (1,1) mode of the diurnal tide induced by zonal mean winds are also taken into account.
