We propose to obtain spectra of Hyades M dwarfs, primarily to measure the activity level from the H(alpha) strength. This data is needed as part of a concurrent photometric study of the rotational modulation of Hyades M dwarfs due to starspots. For stars with similar H(alpha) strengths, the rotational modulation due to starspots will be smaller if the active regions are more uniformly distributed. This is expected to distinguish between a solar-type large-scale (alpha)Ω dynamo (which requires a radiative/convective interface) from a small- scale distributed dynamo, which should be able to operate in fully convective stars. Because the activity level in M dwarfs often changes on long time scales (perhaps due to activity cycles) the spectroscopy needs to be acquired within a year or two of the photometry, which will be obtained over two observing seasons 2010-12.
