The calculation of three different types of gravity assist orbits is discussed. The common approach is the formulation of the problem as constrained parameter optimization. A lunar swingby to rotate the orbit plane of cluster after an ARIANE 4 double launch with SOHO; the GIOTTO post Halley Earth flyby to comet Grigg-Skjellerup; and an energy raising Earth gravity assist orbit for the Comet Nucleus Sample Return Mission are discussed. The proper choice of variables and constraints on the optimization, and the availability of good initial solutions are necessary for convergence of the method. The latter are obtained by heuristic considerations of celestial mechanics or by solving approximate problems (e.g., patched conics, Lambert problem).
