The equilibrium potentials of spherical dust grains of silicate and carbon in the coma of P/Halley and P/Giacobini-Zinner is modelled numerically using the in-situ measurements of the plasma experiments flown aboard the Giotto and ICE spacecrafts. For both comets silicates are found to carry positive potentials (+7 to +10 V); carbonic grains are positively charged near P/Halley (+6 to +3 V), but show repeated changes of their signs in the plasma environment of P/Giacobini-Zinner (+6 to -18 V). The times for charging range up to several thousand seconds. Only very weak grains (στ = 103 to 104dyn cm-2) with ⪉1 μm radii can fragmentate in the comae of the comets considered.
