We propose to use the WFPC2 to acquire high-resolution NIR images ofthe Venus nightside when Venus is near greatest elongation on17 August, 1996. The proposed observations will provide high spatialresolution maps of water vapor in the Venus lower atmosphere as well ashigh-resolution maps of emissivity and atmospheric thermal structurenear the surface. The proposed exposures include:F953N: deep atmosphere water (nightside)F1042M thermal structure near surface and cloud cancellation for F953N
