We propose to make GHRS and WFPC2 observations of Venus tostudy the stratosphere and the thermosphere of Venus. Ourproposed observations will continue to determine the temporaland spatial variations in atmospheric SO_2 which is aplausible indicator of active volcanism on Venus. Our proposedstudy will also provide important observational constraintsfor multi-dimensional dynamical modelling of the thermosphereand the stratosphere of Venus. The proposed GHRS observationsinclude: G140L exposures centered at 1300 and 1600 Angstrom,G200M exposures centered at 2070 and 2160 Angstrom, and G270Mexposures centered at 2550 and 3100 Angstrom. For WFPC2exposures, we plan to use following filters: F255W and F336W.The proposed GHRS and WFPC2 observations will allow us todetermine the global abundances of thermospheric O, C, and COas well as the global abundance of SO_2, SO and the secondabsorber. The WFPC2 observations, which will cover the entireilluminated Venus disk, will allow the GHRS spectra to be putinto context relative to bright and dark UV markings on Venus.
