We propose to obtain FOS spectropolarimetric observations oftwo interacting binary systems, V356 Sgr and TT Hya, inprimary eclipse and outside of eclipse to establish the degreeto which the UV emission lines and the excess continuum fluxseen in these binary systems is polarized. In addition, theFOS ultraviolet spectra will be analyzed, independent of theirpolarization information, since they will represent thehighest S/N spectra ever obtained of these two stars ineclipse (for TT Hya they will also be the highest resolutionUV spectra obtained in eclipse). Earlier (1993) outside ofeclipse FOS spectropolarimetry of V356 Sgr clearly showsintrinsic polarization, suggestive of a bipolar flow. Noprevious UV spectropolarimetric observations of TT Hya exist.Analysis of the UV spectrum and its polarization propertieswill yield information on the location of the continuum andemission line formation region(s), the role of electronscattering in the observed broad line widths, and insight intothe origin, geometry, and physical characteristics of thecircumstellar matter. Thus, the origin of the excess UVcontinuum and the strong high ionization emission lines, andpossibly bipolar flows, in interacting binary systems can bebetter understood.
