Intrinsic ``associated'' absorption has been a well known butlittle understood phenomenon in ultraviolet (UV) studies ofboth low and high luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGN) andin X-ray observations of the former. Recently it has becomeevident that a form of X-ray absorption is also common in highluminosity quasars. The identity of the absorber was notestablished in either UV or X-rays. In a recent study of3C351 we have demonstrated, using both UV and X-ray data, thatthe associated UV metal lines and the soft X-ray absorptionare due to the same material. This is the first confirmedUV/X-ray absorber and the combination of constraints providedby both datasets is powerful in determining the physicalconditions and ionization state of the absorber, which wedetermine to be low density, highly ionized, outflowingmaterial situated outside the broad line region. This is apreviously unknown component of nuclear material. Followingthe result in 3C351, we have shown that the UV and X-rayabsorbers are one and the same in two more AGN: 3C212 andNGC5548. We propose to obtain HST (FOS) UV spectra for 2 AGNwith known, ionized X-ray absorbers in search of other UV/X-ray absorbers. The resulting dataset will allow us toinvestigate the properties of the absorbing material withunprecedented accuracy.
