Observations with HST of the intrinsic EUV spectrum of the upto now unique high-redshift QSO HS 1700+6416 have opened a newfield of research: quantitative spectroscopy of highionization quasar absorption line systems with ~ 40 new EUVlines from ions like OII-OV, NIII, NIV, SIII-SV, NeIII-NeVIIoffers the possibility to determine abundances and to measurethe shape and intensity of the ionizing UV background. , Whilemost UV wavelengths have been covered in previous cycles withthe FOS and the repaired GHRS with reasonable S/N, there is agap between 1450 and 1750Angstrom where available spectrahave too low S/N for quantitative work. , In this wavelengthrange we see in particular Ne lines (NeIII 488, NeIV 541/43,NeV 568, NeV 480, NeVI 433, 558, NeVII 465) in redshiftsystems z=1.725, 1.8465, 2.1678, 2.308, 2.315, 2.433, 2.439,2.579. , We propose to take a GHRS G140L (LSA) and FOS G190Hspectrum covering the range 1450 to 1750Angstrom at a S/N >20 for most of the range useful for quantitative work. , Cycle6 offers the last chance to cover that important range in HS1700, since STIS has a sensitivity gap in that range andcannot be used for that purpose.
