A detailed treatment is given of the minimum density enhancement needed for the guidance of whistler mode waves across the equator in a dipole-like field, with account being taken of field-line curvature and the ambient electron density gradient. Substantial agreement is found with values derived empirically from ray tracing. The generalization to any magnetic latitude is outlined. Recently reported observations of large-amplitude, whistler mode wave ducts in the outer plasmasphere have indicated an offset between the wave intensity maximum and the electron density maximum, and it is shown that this is consistent with the wave intensity maximum occurring at or near the maximum across the duct of the refractive index for propagation parallel to the ambient magnetic field divided by the strength of the ambient field.
