The status of Earth based optical interferometry, its development and its principal achievements during the last decade are reviewed. The various operating interferometric facilities and projects are compared in terms of such factors as sensitivity, number of apertures, and beam combination mode. The future of ground-based interferometry is discussed versus space-based interferometry, in particular with respect to the rapid development of adaptive optics compensation of the atmospheric turbulence.
