These archives were created early in 1988. Corner stones were some important collections of documentation pertaining to the creation and the first decades of operation of the organization, contributed by persons who had been intimately involved in the ESO project from its beginning. The origin and nature of these contributions are briefly described in the introductions of the principal subsections. Contents: 1. Documents received from outside ESO. 2. Documents originating from inside ESO. 3. Documents added and correspondence carried in the course of writing the book "ESO's early history", 1988 - 1991.
