I review the evidence in favour of the existence of intermediate mass
black holes (IMBH) in a sub-set of the class of ultraluminous X-ray
source (ULX). Their X-ray properties and information on their local
environments is beginning to point towards the presence of IMBHs in
some, and perhaps the most luminous, ULX.
